Beagle Potty Training Basics

by Michelle Adams

Many people assume that when Beagle potty training doesn’t go well or that it takes too long that it is the fault of the dog or the breed of the dog. But generally this is not the case and owners need to take a look at how they are training the puppy. It is important that without fail, the puppy is given direct training guidelines that you are the owner will carry out one hundred percent of the time.

When Beagle training is done correctly, there is no reason why it should take anymore then two or three weeks to complete. The most important thing to remember is not to get angry at the puppy when he or she goes inside. They are only doing what comes as a natural thing to them. It is up to you to remain calm and teach them the rules of their new home. If the puppy is taking a long time at training, the fault may be yours.

During the Beagle potty training period, it is best that the puppy is not left alone to wander the house with no one watching. This is generally when accidents happen. As the owner, you must keep a watchful eye on your puppy day and night without fail. Also, do not leave food and water out for your puppy to nibble at all day long. This leads to more accidents then anything else. Control the meal times and make sure you let your puppy out five or ten minutes after they have finished their meal.

You will need to figure out where it is okay for your Beagle to go potty and make sure that they are taken to that place very often. If it advisable that until your puppy can hold their bladder and such for longer periods that you restrict the water and food intake to certain times a day instead of always leaving food and water out.

A puppy that can linger at a food dish or water bowl all day long will of course have to go more often which leads to more mistakes. Provide your pet with set meal times and then make sure they go out within ten minutes or so after eating.

Praise is the number one reason your Beagle potty training will be a success or a failure. It is important that each time your puppy goes potty where you want them to that you give them praise for their efforts. They will learn that the praise comes with the action you desire. This will help make sure the Beagle training experience is both a pleasure for you and the puppy.

The thing that most people do wrong is scolding the puppy when they have an accident inside. Although these animals are smart they do not have the ability to understand why you are mad but they are able to learn to fear you.

This fear can result in even more accidents inside the home. And since you are working on avoiding these accidents, it is best to make sure your puppy respects you instead of fearing you.
