by Carol Matthews

Of all the different breeds of dog that one can choose from, the Golden Retriever is definitely one of the best. This breed is definitely a fan favorite and for very good reason. They are loyal, affectionate, caring and even great with children and make the perfect family pet. As with other breeds of dog however there are certain Golden Retriever problems that may arise, and which you should be prepared for.

There are also a number of health problems that your Golden Retriever may develop, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, von Willebrand’s Disease, hypothyroidism, hereditary heart disease, cancer, arthritis and bloat. Although some of these conditions can get to be quite serious especially if left unnoticed or untreated, there are some very effective treatment methods available for each of these and which will get your dog healthy once again.

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common Golden Retriever problems. In fact, it is recognized as being the most commonly diagnosed hormonal diseases found in dogs. Although it usually occurs between the ages of two to six years it can develop at any point in the dog’s life. There are a few obvious symptoms that typically appear at the onset of this condition, including thin coat, loss of hair, dandruff and increased scratching. The specific treatment that should be used will depend on the individual dog, and you will want to speak to your veterinarian for further information on this.

Unlike hereditary cataracts, this problem can become quite serious and may even result in blindness if left unnoticed or untreated. Von Willebrand’s disease is also a very common problem with Golden Retrievers, and the main symptoms of this condition include excessive bleeding and swelling.

It is a common and usually inherited disorder, one that actually has three different forms: Type 1 vWD, Types II vWD, and Type III vWD.

The most important thing is that you are aware of the different Golden Retriever problems that can arise, and on how you would best go about dealing with them. It is imperative that you talk seriously to your veterinarian about issues like this and learn about the different signs and symptoms that you should be watching out for. No one knows your dog better than you, so if you ever notice your dog acting differently in any way you should bring them to the vet for at least a routine exam.

By keeping a watchful eye on their health and behavior and making sure that they are living as generally healthy a lifestyle as possible, you will be helping protect them from these and other diseases and make sure that they live as long and healthy a lifestyle as they can.

By allowing them to live the healthiest life possible, you will be helping to guard them against all sorts of health and other problems.
